We can arrange for you to visit a Masai village for a day or two. The village is called Ilkurot and it is located about 20 kilometers west of Arusha. The trip starts early in the morning and the drive to the village takes about 3 hours. During the drive you will see local people completing their daily tasks in the many Tanzanian villages you will pass through and beautiful scenery.
When you arrive at the Masai village you will be welcomed by a traditional ceremony which includes dancing and singing. After that you will visit the Masai womens’ hut where you can see the traditional ornaments that the Masai women make from beads. Then you will walk with the guide to the boma, traditional Masai home, nearby. On the way, the guide will describe the plants and animals that you will see and he will explain the traditional lifestyle of the Masai tribe. In the boma, you will meet the village leader, the eldest man of the village. He will tell you about his life and his ten wives. After that, you will have a picnic lunch before heading to the Masai market.
Driving to the market takes about 40 minutes. In the market they sell everything from clothes, food, jewelry and shoes, to spices, fruit, cows and goats. From the market you will be driven back to the village where tents are set up for you to spend the night.
In the village you will get to observe how the Masai men prepare a goat for roasting, that they slaughtered earlier in the day; you will also have the opportunity to taste it. After that you can try on traditional Masai clothes and jewelry, and dance with the Masai people. In the evening, the cook will prepare you a nice dinner by the camp fire, under the amazing starlit sky.
The tents are set up right next to the Masai bomas so you will get to see cows, goats and kids running around the enclosure. You will also get to see Masai men and women completing their daily tasks all around you. When you start to feel tired you can go to your tent to sleep. Masai warriors will stay up all night by the camp fire guarding the boma for your safety.
You will wake up, shortly after dawn, when,roosters are crowing, cows are mooing and goats are bleating. We will make aromatic coffee on the camp fire and prepare a plentiful breakfast.
After breakfast you will start hiking to the Ngorora hill. You will hike for about 3 hours. From the top of the hill, you will see breathtaking views. After hiking, the cook will prepare a simple lunch then pack our things to begin our journey back home.
